Dr. Devaraju Joseph
Dr. Devaraju Joseph holds a Doctorate in Business Administration (Finance) from WMU (US), an MBA in Applied Finance & Investment from UKM, and a B.Soc.Sc. (Hons) in Economics from USM. He is a Certified Chartered and Professional Internal Auditor with The Institute of Internal Auditors Malaysia and Institute of Internal Auditors (USA). At IIAM, he was the Governor of Editorial Board and Chief Editor of KIT Magazine and played an important role in organizing the National Internal Audit, Corporate Governance and ERM Conferences. He is an Associate Consultant with ERM Academy Asia, Kuala Lumpur. He is also member of PARIMA (Pan Asia Risk & Insurance Management Association, Singapore) and does research on corporate governance, global enterprise risk management, ESG & sustainability reporting, strategic business management.
Devaraju commenced his career as a Bank Officer at Bank Pusat Kerjasama Berhad in 1982 and served in various departments notably in internal audit, loan processing, loan recovery and finance and was also appointed as a ‘Task Force Team Member’ by BNM in enhancing the Bank’s ‘computerized loan system operations.
After a span of 10 years in the banking industry, he moved on to general insurance industry in 1992 till 2007 with SEA Insurance Bhd / Uni.Asia General Insurance Berhad (Subsidiary of DRB) and held the positions as an Acting Head of Internal Audit, Head of Credit Control under Finance Division and Head of Claims Budgetary Control respectively. During his tenure in the company, he worked closely with regulatory authorities like Bank Negara Malaysia on JPI guidelines and submission of company’s general insurance quarterly reports, submission, and liaison on Reinsurance reports to MNRB, liaison with local and foreign brokers, foreign re-insurers and insurance agents. He was also instrumental in setting up ERM Operational Framework System in the Claims Division with PwC Consultant Team, acquisition OUI Insurance (S'pore). He played an important part in the ‘due diligence audit’ prior to acquisition OUI Insurance (S’pore) under the DRB subsidiary.
Dr.Devaraju was a corporate training advisor and lecturer at London School of Accountancy & Finance (ACCA UK Studies), Jakarta. He also had a short stint as a Vice President (Risk Management) at The Malaysian Insurance Institute.
He has over 25 years of corporate experience in banking, general insurance, education, co-operative financing and HRDF accredited corporate training. He is an active freelance HRD Corp accredited trainer, where he conducts & facilitates many corporate training courses tailored-made for local & foreign executives & senior government staff notably from Sultanate of Oman, Yemen, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Sudan and Indonesia, in areas relating to corporate governance, ESG & sustainability reporting, ERM, effective internal audit reporting, project due diligence audit, financial reporting-IFRS/MFRS, corporate finance, budgetary control and forensic accounting.
Presently, he is an Associate Professor and lectures IBAS (Switzerland)-DBA & MBA Programs on Finance & its related subjects at Eduk8u Grad School Asia, Kuala Lumpur.
